Where Are the Florida Sinkholes: Essential Information for Community Associations

by Travers Hartnett

There is very little publicly available information on sinkhole or sinkhole insurance claims in the State of Florida. One dated exception is the following article, Florida’s Top 10 Sinkhole-Prone Counties published in the Insurance Journal on March 30, 2011.

To better understand where the Florida sinkholes are currently most prevalent, CondoExec is sharing a map provided by Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection. These “Subsidence Incidents Report” for the State of Florida, were last updated on August 14, 2023.

While all sinkholes are “subsidence incidents,” not all subsidence incidents are technically sinkholes. Thankfully for our purposes however, all subsidence incidents including sinkholes tend to occur in random locations clustered locally. Each reported incident is marked with an O.

If you are interested in doing a deep dive into this subject, I suggest you read the report details, and the disclosure notice on Florida’s DEP website.

And while your community may be located in a low hazard area, please keep in mind that there is a risk of sinkhole formation everywhere in the State of Florida.
